Products that are not placed at the front of the shelf hinders sales

As the the given shelf shows, products are very difficult to find if not placed correctly.

Therefore always trim your shelfs or you will loose sales. Costumers will normally use 3-5 seconds in a purchase decision, therefore it is extremely important that your product is easily found!

Bulk food is a smart way to get what you want without having to buy to much of everything

In Whole Foods they have a bulk department where you can pick and mix your own muesli and you choose from a large selection of dry stuff - nuts, oat meal etc..
It is a green and affordable way for consumers to buy what they exactly need without using enormous amounts of packaging. From watching the movement within the Whole Foods bulk selection in London it seams like it is a trend that is rising as there was a lot of traffic.

No goes and goes

If a shelf is as messy as the one bellow it is extremely difficult to get an overview resulting in lost sales as costumers pass by. I was meet by this example in one supermarket - entered the supermarket next door and was meet with a big barrel and an offer on white wine. Stood looking there for 20 seconds and the display triggered a spontaneous sales. A costumer bought at  least 12 bottles (Look at the last photo).
What really set the display apart was that it was placed in the entrance and not within the wine section. Placing the product outside its section generates an unexpected effect and hinders that there is to much noise from the other competitors. This is the way to go if you want to sell your product as fast as hot pancakes.

Creating an overview between the categories within retail is a good idea if you have clear signing - this case is not the optimal way

Went shopping in a small supermarket that operates with the SPAR network. They have added signing of the categories however, they do not work as they have been placed behind the top of the fridge. They should have been placed as a cover on the top of the fridge. A clear signing of the categories normally works very well if there is a red threat in the way it is done. If you do not do this your work is not worth the while if you do not do it right from the start.

When you are able to get this amount of space it is easy to obtain your sales targets

Marabou chocolate has really maxed out it's presence.  A 10x2m display solution will for sure generate sales within the chocolate category.

Freezer with transparent sides enables clear visibility

Freezers in supermarkets are often difficult to navigate within as you have to bend over  the freezer in order to get an overview. Open transparent freezers help costumers to explore and navigate within the freezer space.  SuperBest in Slangerup in Denmark only operates with transparent sides.

Open fridge is more tempting

Closed rack fridges often generate a purchase barrier as access to the products is not that fast as within open spaces. A good way to generate an open and inviting space is to use open refrigerated islands. SuperBest in Slangerup have deigned an open and inspiring refrigerated solution.

In Mexico supermarkets are also operating with open refrigerated space. Here the space is used in front of the deli counter in order to trigger both spontaneous and destination oriented sales.

It is not the most beautiful solution, but it is sustainable and it works

Føtex a Danish supermarket chain using aluminum tables with basket. Instead of having carton displays that often have a short  “shelf live” this is a good way to have a sustainable and simple way of making joint purchases. Place this table with ketchup nearby the sausages and you will se what will happen to your sales of ketchup.
